Karimabad is the main base. The old town climbs the hillside below Baltit Fort, with Altit Fort and its old village a short drive away.
What to see
Baltit and Altit are the two historic forts, and both are worth a slow visit. In the evening, the Eagle’s Nest viewpoint above Duikar looks over the valley to Rakaposhi and the peaks around Ultar Sar.
Around the valley
The lanes between orchards and irrigation channels are best explored on foot. In spring the apricot trees flower, and in autumn the valley turns gold and red.
