What to pack for a trip to Hunza

A practical packing list for Hunza and Gilgit-Baltistan: layers, sun protection, footwear, cash and the small things people forget.

Trekkers walking below a snow-covered peak above Hunza

Hunza sits between roughly 2,000 and 3,000 metres, and the weather can change within a day. Pack for sun at midday and cold in the evening.

Clothing

  • Light layers you can add and remove, plus a warm fleece or down jacket
  • A waterproof shell
  • Comfortable trousers for walking and long drives
  • Modest clothing: shoulders and knees covered, which is respectful in villages

Footwear

Bring sturdy, broken-in walking shoes or boots. Village lanes and fort steps are uneven, and trails can be rocky.

Sun and altitude

The sun is strong at altitude, so bring sunglasses, a hat and high-factor sunscreen. Drink plenty of water, and tell your guide if you feel unwell.

Money and phones

Carry enough cash in Pakistani rupees for the days you are away from large towns, because cash machines and card payments can be unreliable. Mobile coverage varies, so download maps in advance and bring a power bank.

Medicines

Bring any prescription medicines you need, plus a small first-aid kit. Check with your doctor about altitude and any vaccinations before you travel.
